Najma Akhtar

Najma Akhtar established herself in the World Music scene as a pioneering vocalist by bringing together western jazz and Indian classical to create her own distinct style to the traditional repertoire of Ghazal and this led her on to collaborate with many world-class artists, as diverse as Jah Wobble, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, Andy Summers, Basement Jaxx, Jethro Tull, Philip Glass and many more.

Utterly distinct, she has received huge critical acclaim from Rolling Stone magazine which praised her ‘effortless artistry and emotional daring‘, to The Observer which noted that ‘The pure soaring arc of Najma’s voice remains above emulation’.

Constantly being inspired by new sounds and musical genres that resonate with Indian classical, folk, sufi, jazz, blues and semi‐classical music in 2009 Najma had pushed the sound barriers once again by introducing a psychedelic sound to her list of eclectic influences on her collaborative album ‘Rishte’, with Grammy nominated guitarist Gary Lucas. The reviews for ‘Rishte’ were brilliant, including David Fricke’s review, which was  Fricke’s Pick of the Month, in the November 26th, 2009 issue of Rolling Stone Magazine.
